Our Private Law Division is a vital and highly regarded integral part Blake Morgan. It generates fees of over £10m and comprises 120 people, operating out of our offices in London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Cardiff and Oxford offices.  Succession and Tax is the largest part of this division.

Our clients include high net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs and owners of business, farms and estates, and families that require advice on succession and tax, residential property or sensitive family issues spanning, divorce, mediation and mental capacity. We are committed to the highest levels of personal service and have the breadth of expertise to guide and advise families and individuals in a wide range of matters both non-contentious and contentious.

Typical workload

As a Private Client specialist, or someone looking to develop as specialist in this area you will have had some, perhaps a great deal of, experience of the following:

•  lifetime and post-death estate planning including the drafting of Wills and powers of attorney advising on charitable legacy giving;

•  taxes affecting individuals and trusts including inheritance tax, capital gains tax and income tax and the use of trusts in lifetime and post-death estate planning. (We have a vacancy for a specialist tax adviser working alongside our trust and private client lawyers).

•  drafting and advising on trusts including advising trustees on their duties and the management of trusts. (We have a vacancy for specialist trust adviser working alongside our trust management team and our private client lawyers).

•  obtaining grants of probate or letters of administration and administering estates, including foreign domicile and intestate estates

•  preparing deeds of variation and deeds of family arrangement

•  a good working knowledge of trust management and administration

•  mental capacity issues and Court of Protection expertise such as powers of attorney, deputyship applications, or setting up personal injury trusts.

Skills and personal qualities

This very much depends upon your experience and track record but what we want to see is the following:

•  strong technical competence and exposure to high calibre work is important in senior level candidates, as are coaching and supervision skills

•  at senior level client relationship management and a track record of effective business development is expected

•  for our junior opportunities the potential to grow professionally and intellectual capability is valued more than actual experience

•  good communication skills (verbal and written)

•  commitment to high levels of client care

•  confident and personable

•  well regarded in their current position

•  able to demonstrate a team working ethic and examples of acting as a good role model for others in the team

•  flexible

•  IT literate

•  applications from STEP qualified practitioners particularly welcome

•  applications from part qualified Legal Executives and Chartered Legal Executives are particularly welcome

•  we will consider part time and flexible working arrangements for people with the experience to operate with a reasonable degree of autonomy but as an integral part of our wider team.
